MLFM – Xitsonga Music Awards: 05 November 2011




Munghana Lonene FM – one of SABC Public Radio Service invaded Tzaneen last week Saturday hosting their 08th Annual Xitsonga Music Awards, a flagship project which was started in 2002. It was a massive weekend for Nkowankowa residents and to those who live around the township as Munghana Lonene FM proudly awarded Xitsonga musicians who contributed meaningfully in preserving the Xitsonga culture and heritage through dance and music, listeners were also rewarded for voting through cash prize and free cell phone airtime sponsored by the leading cellular phone network in the country VODACOM.


pic01mlMunghana Lonene FM Annual Xitsonga Music Awards 2011 was officially launched to the media and public on Friday 30th September 2011 at Tzaneen Country Lodge.  The launch was a huge success with a wide spectrum of media, listeners, sponsors, politicians, partners and business representatives in attendance.  The station proudly announced its association with Mopani District Municipality who played host to the Awards ceremony this year.


The relationship is undoubtedly going to grow in leaps and bounds and the objective is to foster a long-term working relationship with Mopani District Municipality going forward.  The station and the sponsor Mopani district Municipality announced their excitement to be in Nkowankowa to celebrate the Xitsonga music and support the artists, hence the theme this year, “VUYIMBELERI LEBYI I BYERHU”.   The station then invited listeners on air to the celebration in glamorous, traditional attire outfits.  The lineup of artists bellied for performance included MLFM DJs, National DJs like Revolution, Traditional performance by Marimba group, Vuyelwa and many other performances, which included chorographic performances and all the groups on stage did not disappoint.


Nkowankowa stadium a 13 000 capacity stadium was packed to capacity thanks to the security control, as the station takes forward one of its mandate of restoring human dignity by empowering and recognising artists. Entertainment was galore within the two and half hours formal programme which kick started at 18:15 until 20:30 attracted Limpopo’s powerful politicians like Executive Mayor Cllr Joshua Matlou who was the main guest speaker.


pic02mlThe 600 invited guests in the VIP tent and close to 10 000 listeners in the pitch and grand stand witness the event. The who is who of Limpopo formed part of the event  with guest list which included distinguished guest such as SABC PBS General Manager Mr. Mandla Soko, Radio 2000 Station Manager Mr. James Shikwambana, MLFM Acting Station Manager Mr. Lawrence Ubisi Phalaphala Programmes Manager and Marketing Manager and local famous business gurus. Munghana Lonene’s notorious Sydney B and Khensani Nyango were Master and Misses of ceremony of the day, from one corner of the decorated VIP Marquee to the other, it was the glittering colours of Vatsonga/Machangana.


The Xitsonga Music Awards main objective is to promote Xitsonga Language through music and celebrate the culture of Vatsonga/ Machangana, recognize, reward a year of musical commitment and excellence, contribute in the development of local talent and improve working relationships with artists and record companies. The Awards are aimed at ensuring that artists and record companies contribute significantly in nation building. “Ensure that music remains a powerful instrument that helps to deepen democracy, which translates in building brand affinity through experiential marketing opportunities, brand association,  goodwill” Says the Marketing Manager of MLFM Mr. Churchill Chawane.  Finally the main purpose was to stage a memorable prestigious event that will facilitate interaction between artists, loyal fans and listeners.

  1. Best newcomer – Aliya
  2. Gospel song – Worship House ( Ndza ta ke Hosi )
  3. Xingondo song – Zozo (Mali)
  4. Disco song – Joe Shirimani na Bangoni Bandawu (Mahlevezulu)
  5. Female artist – Mhani liya ya phundu
  6. Male artist – Benny Mayengani
  7. Duo/Group – Dr Thomas Chauke na Shinyori Sisters
  8. Dance/House song – Oskido (Banani Mavoko)
  9. Most popular song -  Dr Thomas Chauke na Shinyori Sisters (Muhisi wa ritshwa)
  10. Song of the decade - Dr Thomas Chauke na Shinyori Sisters (Matiphina)
  11. A category prize cash tag of R10 000.00 was given including the 2 Life Time Awards (Samuel Mabunda and Norman Mathebula)


The Best New Comer and Most Popular Song of the Year received R5000.00 and R15000.00 respectively


If you think that was enough for the night, think twice as this was followed by a massive Music Festival night hosted by the famous Dj Brian and Tebogo Magubane with renowned musicians like George Maluleke, Vuyelwa, Benny Mayengani, N’wa Sono, Price Rhangani, Dj Themba, Revolution, just to mention few who were showcasing their expertise on stage.
